There Is A Subthing Under The Bed

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Some of you have already noticed Yamaha’s newly designed low profile subwoofer, the YST-FSW050. This subwoofer is so much more than just a new shape. It uses several of Yamaha’s latest technologies to offer a beautiful, low profile subwoofer with fantastic performance to boot. It employs the new Active YST II technology - a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST II helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance. It also uses a linear port that helps minimize huffing and other extraneous noise. This is a down firing active subwoofer which helps evenly distribute bass throughout the room while remaining powerful. The subwoofer is also rack mountable and complements any Yamaha Sound Projector or Micro System. Even though this subwoofer is short enough to slide conveniently under a chair or a bed, the question is since it is so pretty, would you even want to?

Triple 18″ Sub Project

A friend of mine recently called me up and told me about the new Maelstrom-X 18″ sub driver from DIYcable and thought it would be a great driver to start another do it yourself project. About a month later, Darren my partner, had come this far on the project and thought I would post some shots of it unfinished. These shots were taken prior to internal bracing and we are still waiting on the passives to complete our triple 18″ sub project.

Still undecided on the finish as well but here are a few pictures.

Powered with a QSC RMX 2450on a separate 20 amp circuit (the 15 amp circuit struggled under the load).

SVS PB12+2 Monster Sub Woofer

picture-387.jpgpicture-386.jpgpicture-059.jpgpicture-061.jpgpicture-061.jpg

The biggest monster sub woofer to date I have had in my media room is the SVS Pb12+2. Each PB 12+2 weighs in at 140lbs of pure bass dynamite! These subs WILL rock your world period. The PB12+2 comes equipped with dual 12″ subs, a 900 watt BASH amplifier, Parametric EQ (premium finishes only), and three patented 4″ high-flow flared ports. One of the things I liked the ability to do with the PB12+2 was actually tune the sub myself via the Variable 16Hz, 20Hz or 25Hz tuning. I ended up plugging two ports and leaving the third open which sounded the best in my room.

Never one to skimp on the bass department I was completely happy with the single SVS. In fact that one sub put out so much bass that we broke 3 pictures! Not in the media room, not in the dining room, but upstairs! nothing is safe on your walls with one of these monsters rolling out thunderous low frequencies. Like a true bass head I thought if one was good than two is better. I ordered another!

My media room is roughly 4000 cubic ft. partially open to the kitchen and the upstairs with vaulted ceilings, and one of these was plenty for my room. The second one was just plain too much for me to handle. Two of these made my stomach hurt. But it was fun while it lasted. Oh and I wont go into the third one! YEAHHHHHHH!!!!

Took some shots of these finely crafted subs. Two are in the rosewood finish and one is in the fine textured black. Since then two were sold and one used for a Tacoma home theater install I did for a very, very, happy customer, though he complains often of his stomach hurting:)

AV123 UFW-10

picture-114.jpgpicture-112.jpgThe AV123 UFW-10 has to be one of my favorite little subs along with the x-sub by av123. It however goes a little lower and has more output than the x-sub. With a 10″ driver and a 500 watt plate amp in a sealed enclosure it plays out cleaner too. Though I got these in Birds eye maple preffering the rose wood veneer I still can appreciate the fit and finish of any color chosen veneer by this company.

The pictures I have here are shown with the UFW-10s unhooked from the system, but I eventually placed them behind the couch for two channel listening only. I am a base freak when it comes to movies, so I require a much bigger sub to hit lower and harder. But for most, this sub would do just fine in a small room.

Driver: 10″ black-annodized alloy cone woofer

Onix X Sub Piano Rosewood

I just picked up a pair of Onix X subs in piano rosewood. This style of veneer has since been discontinued but I got the last two pair. Now you can get them in satin black, palisander rosa satin, Palisander natural satin, and sycamore satin.

These little subs come powered by a 150 watt plate amp and use a single 8″ driver. You might think that at this size it would be barley adequate for music and movies and best suited for a computer or small bedroom. Not true! This, if we are still calling it little, is an incredible sub for the small financial investment. With a Frequency Response of 28Hz - 150Hz +/- 3 dB this little tank plays loud and clean for its size.

I recently hooked one of these up in someones garage converted to a gym, not expecting it to do more than add a little oomph to the low end. We had to keep turning the gains down to tame the little monster! This was an over sized double car garage mind you much bigger than your average living room.

I currently have both of these units hooked up via the Stereo high level input and output to the Aperion Intimus 532 book shelf speakers. Not corner loaded they are positioned at about 4 ft. out from the side walls and 1 ft from the back wall each. Not placing them in the corners didn’t hurt the bass output beings I am running two and having them placed like this, in my room, adds the perfect amount of clean sounding bass for two channel listening. I am beyond impressed.

This is another product that attest to av123’s devotion to providing cost effective products,”built better than they should be for the price”, to satisfy our audio needs.

Type: Slot ported single-driver system
Driver: 8″ mass loaded woofer

Phase Control: 0 and 180
