BONUSVIEW FUNCTIONS
Make the Most of Blu-ray Discs
Blu-ray Discs are one of the best ways to take advantage
of the great entertainment that high-definition video and
audio makes possible. Since a single-layer disc holds 25GB
of data, a Blu-ray Disc stores five times more data than a
standard DVD, providing superb picture resolution and
surround sound.

The BD-S2900 offers compatibility with the latest
Blu-ray Disc format and the finest audio and video quality,
as well as the latest features like Picture-in-Picture
(Secondary Video/Audio) and Virtual Package.
Secondary Video (Picture-in-Picture)/Audio
Secondary Video lets you view a smaller picture inside the
main picture (with compatible Blu-ray Discs). Secondary
Audio lets you hear the smaller picture’s audio as well.
Both can be selected from the BD-S2900 remote control.

Virtual Package
This feature lets you combine information from a Blu-ray
Disc with local storage information on an SD card to enjoy
additional content and services as they become available.

HIGH PICTURE QUALITY
1080p/24fps-Compatible HDMI Output
1080p is the highest level of video resolution, and
the BD-S2900 can output these video signals directly
to a receiver via the HDMI output. Generally, these
signals are sent at 60 frames per second (FPS) but
the BD-S2900 can also transmit 24fps signals, which
is the same frame rate that movies are shot at. This
provides a much sharper picture, with smoother
motion.

12-Bit Deep Color
HDMI also supports a technology called Deep Color,
which increases the number of bits available for
transmission, meaning more colors! In fact, with 12-
bit compatibility, the BD-S2900 can provide 4,096
shades of each of the three primary colors. That
means 4,0963 for a total of 68.7 billion possible
colors, which in practical terms results in much great
color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions and ultra-fine
gradations between colors. It also enables many
times more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

MAGNIFICENT AUDIO PERFORMANCE
HD Audio Bitstream
The digital audio signals from high bit-rate audio signals
(Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio
and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio) are output directly
from the player to the receiver (via an HDMI cable),
without conversion to PCM. By using a receiver with HD
audio decoders, the sound you hear will be exactly the
same as the originally recorded material.

ADVANCED FEATURES
Design Matches Yamaha Receivers
The front panel appearance matches Yamaha’s top-class
receivers, so your system will have a neat, uniform look.

RS-232C Interface
By using this interface you can control your player with a
touch-screen panel or use a computer for custom
configurations.

IR In/Out
These ports make the BD-S2900 easy to integrate into a
custom installation for convenient remote control operation.

One box speaker systems look similar. Most are called Soundbars but we also have a few models called Sound Projectors. What is the difference? Soundbars are designed to replicate virtual surround sound. Typically, they use up to 6 different drivers, permanently positioned at different angles to fire sound into the listening room and give the illusion of surround sound. Some Soundbars work quite well. They usually offer somewhat limited audio connections in the back and are designed to replace a HTIB or entry level home theater system if space is an issue or rear speakers cannot be installed properly. They are designed for smaller rooms.

Unique to Yamaha, a Sound Projector is designed to also get rid of rear speakers; however, instead of creating virtual surround sound it is capable of creating true surround sound by sending various beams of sound around the room. Created with up to 42 speakers, these 5 beams of sound reflect off of any reflective surface like walls, windows, pictures, or even large plant vases to deliver 360 degree sound around the listening area just like a conventional surround system. The automatic setup adjusts the beam angle, distance, volume, and sound characteristics to make sure that the sound is optimized for each room individually. Sound Projectors do have a mode called My Surround Mode to create a virtual surround experience if the room does not have many reflective surfaces. Sound Projectors are more full functioning with video inputs, digital/analog audio inputs, and automatic setup. Some feature HDMI and video upconversion.

On June 1st, Audio Video Revolution presented another amazing review of Yamaha’s YSP-4000 flagship Digital Sound Projector. You can read the entire review by clicking here.

The reviewer takes us through the initial set-up (commenting on the great microphone stand and wondering why other manufacturers don’t do that), a number of music only demos followed by the principle function of the YSP-4000 as a surround sound speaker system, viewing a number of his favorite movies. To say that he was impressed would be an understatement. In conclusion he said “I love this thing! It’s so simple that even the most non-technical of people can figure out how to use it. It’s also just so damned convenient that you will find yourself listening to more music than you ever imagined, which is a compliment traditionally reserved for the most lofty audiophile products with a price tag to match. Yamaha should be proud of how well the YSP reproduces music from such a slim and relevant product. It’s one hell of a product”. He does recommend the use of a sub-woofer, which Yamaha also recommends and provides a sub-woofer output for that purpose.

It’s all about the music. The shorter the signal path, the better the music. Pure Direct is about as short a signal path as you can get. Pure Direct mode shuts down all unneccesary processing to give you the purest most accurate audio signal possible. Pure Direct can now be used on any incoming audio signal including HDMI. To give you the best experience possible, we even shut off the front video panel to reduce distortion. You will know Pure Direct by its telltale blue light. Put in any material like a CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray disc and press that simple clear button on the front of your receiver. Listen, if just for an instant, and you will know what joy that little blue light can bring.

If you want to watch a movie or play a video game, do not use Pure Direct as the video section will be turned off with Pure Direct mode. Instead, try Straight Mode or Straight Enhancer.

Network capabilities. With an ethernet connection on the back and a USB port on the front, this receiver will be the center of your media world. Take a USB key, load it up with WMA, MP3 and WAV files to make instant music playlists. Using a third party hub and the ethernet connection allows you to network up to a total of four PCs. You can access music from your PCs and play it back through your home theater system (as long as it is not copy-protected or AAC encoded). In order to make it a wireless solution, add a gaming adaptor (wireless access point) to your receiver and set them up to work with a wireless router. Once connected to broadband internet, you can stream internet radio stations. Vtuner makes it easy by giving you a real-time updated database of about 4000 stations and 7000 podcasts selected and sorted for content, overall quality and bandwidth. Just browse by categories like genre, podcast and popular. You have a great Graphic User Interface for USB, PCs, and Internet Radio. The RX-V1800 is a fantastic receiver but there are a few key differences that make the RX-V3800 really stand out. A Graphic User Interface makes controlling the 3800 a breeze with a color pictoral display instead of just text on a black background. You can hook up the RX-V3800 to a broadband internet connection for instant access to internet radio, share your PC music folders to access music content from up to four connected computers on your home theater system, and plug a flash drive into the front USB port for your own portable DJ. With an upgraded amplifier, the RX-V3800 will make any speakers sing. Even the Digital Sound Field (DSP) processing has been improved. Similar to the surround processing of the new flagship receiver, hook up a pair of presence speakers to reproduce the width and height of real venues around the world like the Roxy Theater and a concert hall in Vienna.

This subwoofer is so much more than just a new shape. It uses several of Yamaha’s latest technologies to offer a beautiful, low profile subwoofer with fantastic performance to boot. It employs the new Active YST II technology - a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST II helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance. It also uses a linear port that helps minimize huffing and other extraneous noise. This is a down firing active subwoofer which helps evenly distribute bass throughout the room while remaining powerful. The subwoofer is also rack mountable and complements any Yamaha Sound Projector or Micro System. Even though this subwoofer is short enough to slide conveniently under a chair or a bed, the question is since it is so pretty, would you even want to?

A friend of mine recently called me up and told me about the new Maelstrom-X 18″ sub driver from DIYcable and thought it would be a great driver to start another do it yourself project. About a month later, Darren my partner, had come this far on the project and thought I would post some shots of it unfinished. These shots were taken prior to internal bracing and we are still waiting on the passives to complete our triple 18″ sub project.

Still undecided on the finish as well but here are a few pictures.

Powered with a QSC RMX 2450on a separate 20 amp circuit (the 15 amp circuit struggled under the load).
